Inspired by the rich textile history of Gemert, Velvet Structures explores how velvet can be reinterpreted through contemporary textile design. The project investigates texture, structure and craftsmanship while creating new possibilities for a traditional material.
Velvet Structures is a research project that combines historical inspiration with modern experimentation. Through sampling, material studies and textile manipulation, the project creates new surfaces that preserve the luxurious character of velvet while introducing contemporary forms and applications.
Different constructions, colours and finishing techniques were tested to discover how velvet behaves when manipulated. The resulting textile samples reveal new tactile qualities while remaining connected to the historic craftsmanship of the region.
